Thibault: Just before the first questions of this interview, could you tell me how the band is born?
Dieter Sermeus: In the beginning it was just me making music in my little studio. I recorded the first record Miami together with Arne from Styrofoam. But I needed musicians to play the album on stage. That’s how it started. With the second record those same guys helped me recording the record and with the third record we kinda grew into a band.
Thibault: What is the starting point of your new album?
Dieter Sermeus: Acoustic guitars and drums: me and the drummer making songs in my little studio and recording them with two mics.
Thibault: How did you proceed to realize your albums in the past? And did you proceed similarly for this one?
Dieter Sermeus: No. In the past it started out with an idea. I started working with on my computer. Sometimes the songs were finished (even the details), sometimes other people added stuff. But for this record it all started with me and my drummer Tim rehearsing, playing… in the studio.
Thibault: The Go Find including six musicians, Is there any problem of ego or something else during the composition and recording of an album?
Dieter Sermeus: Not really but when decisions need to be taken, everybody expects me to take them. So sometimes I need to tell someone that their part will not be used. Till know I have the feeling that the guys always go along with the way I see things. Even when at first there is a lot of discussion. But most of the times we kinda all agree.
Thibault: Incidentally, who compose the songs into the band?
Dieter Sermeus: I’m the main composer. Some Songs are written with the drummer.
Thibault: Do priorities exist when you have to compose a song ?
Dieter Sermeus: I guess I go with the mood and then a melody. Lyrics are always the last thing I’ll add to a song.
Thibault: How many songs did you record for this album?
Dieter Sermeus: 12, so only one was thrown out.
Thibault: I guess you feel a twinge of sadness when you have to move some tunes out the final tracklist …
Dieter Sermeus: Not really. It comes kinda natural and in the end it always feels like the right decision.
Thibault: With ‘Everybody Knows It’s Gonna Happen Only Not Tonight’, did you try to create a sort of rupture with the previous records?
Dieter Sermeus: In a way it’s more of an uptempo record but everybody keeps saying it’s a typical go find record, so I guess it just feels different for us but not for the people who like us.
Thibault: The difference between the light-hearted and melancholic tunes is really obvious here. I guess this album is probably more dynamic than “Stars On The Wall”, thanks to sudden changes of atmosphere between songs like “Lottery Man”, “It’s Automatic” and songs like “Just A Common Love”, “Heart Of Gold”. Do you agree?
Dieter Sermeus: I agree. But I don’t know if that’s better… Most of the time I think it is (cause that’s what we wanted) but I guess the next record will be more one mood ….again…
Thibault: It’s difficult to compare your music to anyone else, even if the two last tunes – by the way the best tunes of the album in my opinion – have lots of things in common with the songs of the dream-pop band Stars. Do you still have any major influences or inspirations?
Dieter Sermeus: Thank you for the comparison. I like stars (I only got that sad robot ep…). I listen to a lot of music all the time. I’m really a music fan. But I’m sure I have a lot of influences. I guess the only thing you can do when writing music is to try to forget about all you favorite music, write songs and delete all the songs you think sound too much of other songs. If you are honest to yourself, the songs which sound a bit like other band’s songs are kicked out as soon as possible.
Thibault: You are signed on the label Morr Music, which gather great bands and artists. Seabear, Radical Face, Sin Fang Bous, The Wooden Birds, to name but a few. It proves that your work is recognized.
Dieter Sermeus: It’s s wonderful to be on that label. It’s a dream come true !
Thibault: Do you have already planned some tour dates to support your new album?
Dieter Sermeus: We are doing a major part of the Album leaf tour as a support band. We will do shows in Italy, Germany, Turkey (Istanbul)…. Yeah it’s going to be fun !
Thibault: Did you play new songs on scene before the release of the new album, to poll reactions from the audience?
Dieter Sermeus: We did two try outs but the record was already finished so we couldn’t change it. We didn’t try out them before the recording.
Thibault: From the moment that illegal download is become a habit, what could you do to encourage people to buy your music?
Dieter Sermeus: I really dunno. We did that thing with the songcards…. It’s really hard these days….I guess everything is changing so fast….
Thibault: Ok, let me ask you a few random things right now. Could you give me …
Dieter Sermeus:
- Three reasons to love your new album: We love you forever / It’s a really good record to make love too / Your kids will thank you for it.
- Three words to describe it: sweet, dreamy, honest.
- The songs in it which represents the best the band and his music: « Just a common love », « Everybody knows », « Heart of gold ».
- Your favorite song on this album and the reason why you love it: « Heart Of Gold » because I’m a big Roxy music fan and we wanted to make the new Avalon !
Thibault: If you have to choose right now:
Dieter Sermeus:
- An artist: Robert Wyatt
- An album: « Crazy Rhythms » by The Feelies
- A song: « Happiness is a warm gun » (Beatles/John Lennon)
- One of your songs: « Stay »
- A movie: « The Passenger » (Antonioni)
- An actor: Johnny Depp
- An actress: Charlotte Gainsbourg
- An artist to kill: …
- A drink: Wine from Bourgogne.

- An animal: Rabbit
- A dream: Dirty.
- A super-hero power: Mindreading.

Thibault: What kind of artists and bands did you listen these days?
Dieter Sermeus: Girls, Pantha Du Prince, Gil Scott Heron.
Thibault: I interviewed a few weeks ago Christophe Danthinne, the lead singer of the Belgian band Showstar. I asked him his opinion about the Belgian artists, because I am really impressed by artists and bands native to your country (Absynthe Minded, Ghinzu, Zita Swoon, dEUS, Admiral
Freebee, The Go Find, …). What is your point of view on this subject?
Dieter Sermeus: I guess there is a good atmospere and there are nice venues to play. Maybe it’s just a phase and it will all end soon…. but yes there are some good bands coming from Belgium but on the other hand: look at the good french bands: Phoenix, M83, Charlotte Gainsbourg….. I mean I guess it’s not so different in Belgium as for example in France …
Thibault: Ok, the interview is now finished, so if you wish to add something,
just do it:
Dieter Sermeus: Thank you very much!
